XXIII FORUM WORLD HERITAGE and FOOD TO FEED

The theme “World Heritage and Food to Feed” explores the connection between world heritage and food, highlighting how culinary traditions and cultural landscapes can contribute to sustainable nutrition and address global challenges such as food security and climate change. Culinary traditions, like the Mediterranean diet and Japanese washoku, are protected by UNESCO for their cultural value and respect for sustainable agricultural practices. Other examples include agricultural landscapes like the rice terraces of the Philippines and historic olive groves, which promote biodiversity and sustainability. These agricultural landscapes are also linked to architecture, cities, and historic centers, where architectural design integrates food production and sustainability. Traditional agricultural practices, such as crop rotation and the use of local varieties, can ensure food security without harming the environment. Biodiversity is crucial, with agricultural practices that preserve unique ecosystems and reduce environmental impact. Architecture plays an important role in reflecting food and cultural values. Designing homes that promote conviviality, sustainability, and a connection to nature, such as traditional Mediterranean houses, Japanese homes, or rural dwellings in developing countries, fosters a connection between food, community, and the environment. Sustainability in architecture can also be seen in contemporary projects that combine tradition and innovation, like modular bamboo homes in Vietnam or urban agriculture projects in Cuba. Historic Italian buildings, like masserie in Southern Italy, trulli in the Valle d’Itria, courtyard houses in the Po Valley, and the Sassi di Matera, reflect the bond between architecture, food, and landscape. These historical buildings were designed to meet agricultural and food production needs, such as food preservation and production. Italian architectural solutions are examples of sustainability that integrate traditional food practices with the surrounding environment. Global challenges require an integrated approach to food sustainability. Scientific communities and governments must cooperate to promote agricultural practices that preserve biodiversity and encourage food self-sufficiency. Architecture, therefore, becomes a powerful tool to reflect values related to food and sustainability, creating spaces that celebrate cultural diversity and promote innovative solutions for a more sustainable and connected future. Finally, architecture and food are closely linked to cultural heritage, and innovative and resilient solutions can inspire global design that respects the environment and promotes equitable access to food. Scholars are called upon to contribute with research and proposals to develop sustainable practices that integrate food with daily life and architectural context, reflecting local traditions and global needs.

From the XXI FORUM WORLD HERITAGE and DWELLING ON EARTH to the XXII FORUM WORLD HERITAGE and CITIES IN EMERGENCIES
World Heritage and Dwelling on Space – World Heritage and Cities in Emergencies: this is the title of the International Forum “Le Vie dei Mercanti” which reached its XXII Edition in 2024. A story of love for the Earth, its Inhabitants, Landscapes, Architecture, Cultural and Archaeological Heritage told by more than 7000 Scholars and Lecturers from all over the World to with the aim of integrating expertise, sharing and disseminating scientific knowledge and implementing best practices to protect and safeguard our planet. The focus of the Forum is no longer be only Inhabiting the Earth but is stretched and extended to Inhabiting Space, in a broader sense, to reflect on the impact of natural ecological disasters and armed conflicts on Cultural Heritage. Now more than ever, with the war in Ukraine, geographically closer than others, and with the latest events in the Middle East, the theme of wars and conflicts has become even more present in our lives. Armed conflicts, synonymous with death and destruction, as well as weakening the social and economic fabric, put at risk the cultural heritage of besieged countries whose destruction has a strong symbolic as well as strategic significance because of the enormous identity value that resides in cultural heritage which stimulates a sense of belonging and social cohesion. And it is precisely in order to deal with the tragic devastation of entire cities and territories and the terrible wound inflicted on the cultural heritage of peoples that the scientific community must create starting points to implement important and immediate actions aimed at safeguarding monuments, architectural works, archaeological sites, works of art, manuscripts, books and other objects of artistic, historical or archaeological interest, as well as scientific collections of all kinds. If the future is an eternal now, as I remind every year, it is good for the Academy, Scientific Institutions, civil society, and stakeholders involved to make their knowledge and expertise available to promote a more widespread and in-depth knowledge on the issues regarding the safeguarding cultural heritage during armed conflicts.

Dal XXI FORUM WORLD HERITAGE and INHABIT THE EARTH Al XXII FORUM WORLD HERITAGE and CITIES IN EMERGENCIES

Dwelling on Earth! That is the essential goal, synthesized by the title of this conference, towards which we have been working with “Le vie dei Mercanti” forum over twenty-one years. It still remains today the same perspective for us. An intent to be pursued with greater commitment and providing even higher effectiveness, as we all are now aware of being in an emergency with the dramatic scenario opened by climate change. Therefore, what are we to do now with respect to this global imperative? First, I would like to start from the work we have done in every annual forum, the interconnected focus on Ecological Transition, Contamination, Legacy, Knowledge and Disaster, as regards their impact on World Heritage. In that way, the concern for the habitability of our Earth has not only integrated skills, experiences, good practices of Scholars and Academics, but has also created a scientific community from around the world for discussing such multidisciplinary topics. We had the conviction that collaborative action requires not only practices for control, but also a reliance on human ability to ever succeed in defending his patrimonial value with the strong determination to re-design our everyday places. This is the best way for transmitting to the future the values that heritage has passed on to us and we must protect. The pursued goal is obviously not only to act in advance with respect to an environmental disaster, but also to promote in our world a design process in order to re-design the relationship between each man and his living environment.

In 2022 the Capri International Forum ‘Le Vie dei Mercanti’ will reach its 20th edition.
A Story of love for the Earth and its Inhabitants, Landscapes, Architecture, Cultural and Archaeological Heritage told by over 7000 Scholars and Academics from all over the World in an interdisciplinary way, by integrating skills, experiences, good practices in order to train talented people who care about the destiny of our Planet.
If the Future is an Eternal Present, the renewal of the Forum in these twenty years has produced a wealth of knowledge to guide those who govern and administer the Public Good, and citizens in their daily activities. A future that must be prepared in this era, that cannot ignore the ongoing climate change and that should not catch future generations unprepared.
A Present that transmits to the future the values that Humanity has passed on to us and that must be protected and transmitted as regenerative sources of Humanity itself.
