Questo volume offre al lettore la possibilità di uno sguardo nuovo (e forse inaspettato) su Roma e sul suo patrimonio di storia, cultura e sapienza. Rende fruibile, quantomeno parzialmente, la fatale frammentarietà della narrazione di Roma, illustrata con esemplari immagini fotografiche affiancate da brevi didascalie, talora da quegli aneddoti peculiari dell’arguzia del popolo romano che implementano gli stimoli della fantasia … quasi che, di volta in volta, l’affascinante congerie urbana fosse percepita osservandola attraverso il foro della serratura. In questa inafferrabilità dell’intero insiste l’aporia di una metropoli che diviene orizzonte intrascendibile e inabbracciabile del nostro immaginario. Nel quale coltiviamo ancora la speranza che Roma, se non più raggiungibile nella sua sostanza, sia almeno evocabile nell’enigma dei suoi segni riposti. Questo gioco di rimandi e di slittamenti continui del senso è quanto il volume suggerisce, invitando infine il lettore a ricomporne uno suo, più ricco e complesso.

This work offers a new (and probably unexpected) vision of Rome, together with its historical and cultural heritage. It renders vivid, at least partially, the fatal fragmentation of Rome’s history, illustrated through exemplary photographic images and brief captions, sometimes also by anecdotes typical of the Roman wit that stimulate one’s fantasy … as if observing the fascinating extemporaneous urban scene through a key hole. This elusiveness leaves room to the aporia of the metropolis that poses itself as the insurmountable horizon of our imagination. In this horizon we nurture the hope that Rome, even if not comprehensible in its very substance, can at least be evoked in the riddle of its hidden marks. This game of allusions and continuous shifting of meanings finally invites the reader to recreate his own meaning, a richer and more complex one.
