Con il Covid Roma mi è parsa ancora più bella. Città deserta, quasi proibita, bagnata dal sole, in un silenzio irreale, offerta agli sguardi come non lo era mi stata. Scorci nuovi, angoli mai visti prima; pian piano si sono riaperte anche le amate terrazze amiche. Vagando con il mio astuccio mi fermavo sovente; ho persino aggiunto qualche sfumatura dei caldi colori di Roma. Pochi pezzetti di matita colorata, un goccio d’acqua e il mio vecchio pennello. A parte un breve soggiorno a Capri, sempre incantevole, non mi sono mai mossa da Roma. Quando tutto era veramente chiuso facevo venticinque piani di scale, per muovermi un po’. Ho scarabocchiato anche loro. I pochi bellissimi giorni capresi non potevano mancare.

With the arrival of Covid, Rome seemed even more captivating. A deserted city bathed in sunlight, surreal silence, abandoned streets, the sight of which had never been so clear. I discovered new glimpses and corners never seen before. As months went by even my beloved friends’ terraces reopened. Wandering through the city I would stop often to draw, adding here and there some shades of the warm colors of Rome with bits of coloured pencils, a drop of water and my old paintbrush. Apart from a brief stay in Capri, always enchanting, I never left Rome. When everything was closed my daily strolls were replaced by twenty five flights of stairs (I live on the 5th floor) just to move a bit. I sketched those too as I did with the lovely Capri days.

Questi “scarabocchi” sono il frutto di passeggiate per Roma, sempre alla scoperta di un angolo nuovo, di uno scorcio, di un’ombra inattesa che mi fanno amare questa città più di ogni altra. Roma è sempre stata una vera emozione e questi scarabocchi ne sono il frutto. Sono dei piccoli colpi di fulmine un po’ disordinati, ma così facili da tenere sempre con sé. Sono fatti a matita, ripassati a penna e un po’ bagnati, li ho fatti seduta dove mi capitava, su uno sgabello prestato dal negozio vicino, appoggiata ad un paracarro, a volte un po’ in bilico, ma sempre d’impulso. Non ho quasi mai trovato il tempo di aggiungere un colore, quindi molti sono rimasti così, solo degli scarabocchi in bianco e nero.

These sketches are the result of walks around Rome, always discovering a new spot, a glimpse of a view or an unexpected shadow, all of which make me love this city more than any other. Rome has always been an absolute pleasure as illustrated in these sketches. They are small strokes of love, a bit untidy, but so easy to always keep at hand. Drawn in pencil, traced with a pen and lightly brushed over with water, I would create them sitting wherever I could, on a stool lent to me by a nearby shop, leaning against a bollard, at times even a bit unsteady, but always on impulse. I never quite found the time to add on colour, many have therefore remained black and white sketches.
