As the Estorick Collection turns ten years old, I am delighted to congratulate it on a series of outstanding achievements.

I wish to pay tribute to a wonderful collection of Italian artwork created during the first half of the twentieth century, whose existence we owe to the passion and tireless commitment of Eric Estorick. In 1970, Mr Estorick
was bestowed with the honour of Commendatore in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for his role in promoting Italian art in the United Kingdom. A few months before passing away, he succeeded in establishing the Foundation – now chaired by his son Michael – that created this Museum in 1998. Here, his passion to share these treasures with the public lives on.

The gallery is committed to promoting a period in Italian art which is less popular than the Renaissance and Baroque eras. In this way, while helping to establish a wider appreciation of contemporary Italian art, it supports our efforts to update Italy’s image abroad. I am particularly proud that some of the artworks on display here not only testify to the flourishing of remarkable creativity between 1900 and 1950, but also celebrate a number of Italian movements that exerted a substantial influence on foreign artists.
The Italian Government, and specifically the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, supports the Collection and its numerous activities. The Embassy is closely involved and we enjoy excellent cooperation with the Director, Roberta Cremoncini. The museum very often hosts temporary exhibitions that shed light on a particular Italian artist or trend, enabling the British public to become acquainted with unusual aspects of Italian art through innovative and provocative shows.

I wish the Estorick Collection every success, and the ongoing ability to surprise and delight all of us.

The Italian Ambassador
Giancarlo Aragona
