The landscape of Sarno plain, among Vesuvio and Lattari mountains, is made up of dense areas, as Pompei and Scafati, and of fruitful countryside even if differently urbanized. Its regeneration is based on the idea of green discontinuous city, including rural areas, thinking the Giuseppe Samonà’s “extended city” over, related to the current urban problems. The proposal is a multi-polar system, built up by small agrourban clusters separated by rural areas and connected to the reclamation of Sarno river. The main goals of this strategy are to reduce sprawl, to improve soil and canals utilization, to face overflowing risks and exodus needs.

XI Congresso UID – Parma, 18/20 settembre 2014

XI Congress UID – Parma, 18/20 September 2014
The periodic conferences / congresses of scientific societies have always been the best and most effective tool for realizing the state of health, vivacity and research progress of a specific scientific community. They continue to be so, despite the lack of consideration given to them in the first set-up of the VQR 2004-2010 and the criteria for the National Scientific Qualification, which in part remains and which threatens to distance the younger and more exposed scholars from them. to the extemporaneous suggestions deriving from presumed renewing winds, imported from traditions and realities far from ours.
It is difficult for these meetings to come up with absolute excellence, always delegated – according to the specificity and tradition of the community in question – to monographs (as for the humanistic-social areas and partly to ours) or to articles on prestigious magazines scientific, international but sometimes even only national, indexed or not. However, they give a more complete picture of the situation, on what moves and how, on issues of prevailing interest (even when there are thematic meetings) in a given phase, on current trends and their evolution.
The relative acts are the most significant that can exist for a reading in this sense. Always, I try to acquire those of the conventions in our area, even those I have not attended; I examine them, highlighting what, at present, seems to me most interesting; I keep them with care, consulting them invariably when I have to outline the state of the art on some subject that I am going to face.
The acts of this Parma Conference – the 36th of the Teachers of the Disciplines of the Representation in the Faculties of Architecture and Engineering – do not escape these characteristics, rather they fully confirm them.
First of all they attest – in spite of what the ominous birds, present also in our interior, affirm – the consistent resumption of the research activity in the area of graphic representation.
119 contributions were received: a respectable number, if we consider that we are in front of annual conferences, while other similar appointments, such as the EGA congresses or the International Conference on Geometry and Graphic (to mention periodic meetings in which some of us) instead take place every two years.
And if we consider that as many as 54 contributions by Italian colleagues were sent, at the same time, to review the EGrafiA 2014 International Congress, to be held in Rosario (Argentina) only two weeks after the Parma meeting.
Therefore, after the 117 interventions sent to the previous UiD conference in Matera, the strong recovery of interest for our most important annual appointment is confirmed. To this end, it certainly benefited the decision to make it finally itinerant – as is the case for all of its counterparts, anywhere in the world – with a consequent stimulus of dynamism, positive leadership of the interested sites, emulation and tendency to adopt the most shared protocols and best organizational practices: as implemented by the Parma group, coordinated by Paolo Giandebiaggi, to which the Union and my staff are most grateful. Positive, therefore, were the anticipation of the timing of the definition of the issues and of the call; the adoption of the scientific responsibility of the Technical Scientific Committee of the UiD and of participatory procedures for the evaluation and selection of the interventions, with the revision through a rigorous double blind peer review process (with the dispatch to a third reviewer in controversial cases) , which involved more than thirty Italian and foreign colleagues; the appropriate printing of the documents.
The presence of foreign colleagues is still irrelevant in numerical terms, bearing witness on the one hand to the paucity of international relations of an institutional nature of the UID and, on the other, to the fact that within the scientific communities attributable to the graphic representation, the Relief – theme of the Convention – is practiced with specific educational and scientific values almost exclusively by the Italians, by the Spanish of Expresión Gráfica Arquitectónica and (the one in sight) by the Argentines.

On the other hand, as in Matera, where most of the interventions could be traced back to surveys, the chosen theme certainly helped the large participation, confirming that, by now, a large part of the research activity of the sector develops, in Italy, in the field of Relief. This is an unequivocal fact, connected to many factors of various nature, sometimes conflicting and often correlated, on which we must reflect deeply, continuing the debate started in 2012 at the Rome Conference, “In praise of theory. Identity of the disciplines of design and survey ».
To what extent, for example, this is due to the fact that while in the field of infographic representations revolutionary developments have not actually been recorded since the last decade of the last century, Relief, instead, continued to have in recent years significant transformations / innovations? Certainly it is the field that offers us the greatest visibility and the greatest operational possibilities, in the academic field in scientific relations with other cultural areas, in technology transfer, and that in which almost all of our financing activities are carried out by means of third party agreements . It is the one in which we can show off, in addition to “knowledge”, our ability to “know how to do”, just to use a slogan that in the last two decades has characterized, not always positively, the whole Italian university.
Certainly, this conference confirms – even with the interventions received for the third session – which, at best, continues to be applied research. It follows that the problem of the possibility, rather than of the margins, of addressing issues relating to basic theoretical research in this field, too; perhaps with interdisciplinary contributions and close relationships with other sectors (IT in the first place).
On closer inspection, however, it is an activity that not only involves the younger generations of our area in an almost exclusive way, but has had – is having – immense consequences, unthinkable before, as always happens, and, perhaps, by now already irreversible for our cultural and scientific identity.
In fact, the tools and techniques for surveying and restitution have not changed simply and simply, which have upset the way of operating and language, making obsolete procedures that seemed innovative in short, and introducing new terms that have upset the specific lexicon, still in search of its own stability. And that, as well illustrated by Carlo Bianchini, delineate a “real evolutionary leap: a change so radical that I believe can lead to defining a Relief 2.0”.
The very object of our work is changing which, from the relief of architecture and urban environments, has been extended in a more and more consistent and remarkable way to the relief of paintings, wall paintings and not, also of tombs, of sculptures ( ancient and contemporary) and objects, not only archaeological but also of design, even fashion designs. In a word, we could say that it extended to the relief of cultural heritage, in a broad sense; and not only. We are one step ahead, and some of us have already done it, from also dedicating ourselves to the survey of any object, even those of interest in the medical field – from the parts of the human body to their eventual prostheses – as already done in the last decade by colleagues from other areas of engineering representation.
If anyone can be dumbfounded, it is only appropriate to recall that through studies on the body and human proportions Albrecht Dürer grasped the need to represent objects by means of double orthogonal projection, anticipating Gaspard Monge’s approach by about three centuries. To the point that, at the beginning of the twentieth century, Federico Amodeo considered him “the true founding father of descriptive geometry” and even went so far as to propose calling the orthogonal projection method “Dürer-Monge method”.
To those who are more interested in the future than in the past it should instead be pointed out that these works, these objects of investigation, not only testify to a profound enlargement of the sphere of our knowledge, but they are slowly but inexorably reconfiguring our specific, almost like in a genetic mutation. As experts in architectural design – in its various and broad variations, in its scientific foundations and in its applications – we are moving above all to be experts in the processing and use of visual images. This is how we too join what, a quarter of a century ago, Gary Bertoline outlined as a nascent scientific area: that of visual science, whose bases placed in three areas – “spatial cognition, imaging, and geometry” – and for the whose applications identified two sectors, artistic and technical.
More on the merits of the individual reports, it must be said that in some ways the classification is somewhat forced, based on the indications of the same authors, in the three sessions; in particular, some of the interventions in the “Advanced search” section could be better in one of the other two. Most communications are the result of specific research projects and campaigns, including internationally (especially in Eastern Europe and Latin America), often financed after calls for bids with competitive procedures.
There are general interventions on the function and role of the survey, also in the didactic field, and with some interesting comparisons between the experiences of various countries. Reflections on the different types of relief, in particular between the architectural, the archaeological (which is increasingly affecting our area) and that for design (which is already all within the visual science); on the purpose – for documentation, for restoration – of the operation.
in numerous communications there is an adequate critical approach, not simply operational, to the use of the new procedures (of data taking, processing and return of the same), in particular on parametric modeling, on the extension to the survey of logic BiM, HBiM ( Historic BiM) and interoperability, on the introduction of augmented reality, the use of open source software. Sometimes the attempt to help optimize operations is clear, to the point of outlining a complete specific methodology, which is still being defined in many cases.
It is surprising that we continue not to dwell, as would be desirable, on the possible consequences of the loss of immediate and direct contact with the measure, connected to the use of the most technologically advanced equipment, given that architecture, just like engineering, is essential from the measure.
The reliefs in Italy of historic centers, monumental buildings, vernacular architecture, evidence of industrial archeology and fortifications, on which a lot has been worked in the past, have drastically decreased. On the other hand, those on these issues abroad are on the increase and, even in Italy, those on subjects and building types that have been little cultivated in the past: Unesco sites, cemeteries, cave constructions, specific segments of particular architectural seasons (late Gothic Sardinian, churches Neapolitan gothic, Italian-Greek religious architecture) and, above all, of wall paintings.
There is a sort of stasis on the reliefs of the territorial and urban realities, for which there are few relationships (the group of Carmine Gambardella, Andrea Rolando, for example), despite the great possibilities that the new procedures allow, giving a glimpse of the first time potential to overcome the limits of traditional representation.
Curiously, the multicriteria analysis, on which so much has been worked on at SUN; the representation of the intangible features of the territory, a theme started in Italy some fifteen years ago at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Salerno; the experiments and practices of the research groups of the Polytechnic of Turin regarding the representation of the environment and the territory, there are still isolated experiences that have not had significant repercussions in our field.
On the other hand, there is an interesting enlargement for the traditional architectural survey, in particular with the need, now more approachable, to keep in mind not only the physical-geometric space but also what Rosario Marrocco defines in his intervention the “perceived space [ …] largely understood and identifiable as the lived space ». A space that takes into account, therefore, the time dimension and the transformations of the physical space due to endogenous and exogenous factors (e.g. illumination, moving bodies).
And that in fact could be understood as the architectural space tout-court, considering that by now it is almost a century that, with the acquisition of the awareness of the time dimension and with the massive use of glass and its derivatives or surrogates as material from construction, the space-volume identity, architectural space-geometric space is broken and the first has become something much more complex and articulated.
As in any complex process, many steps have been taken, but also someone has come back.
Fortunately, communications prepared on the basis of surveys carried out by the students disappear almost completely, perhaps because they do not (yet) have the necessary equipment for the new technologies.
Other positive elements are the wide participation of unstructured young people, almost half of the total, and the fact that many expert professors have submitted, without blinking, their interventions to anonymous reviews.
The communications are enriched with an appropriate broad cut and interdisciplinary openings, with notes, not only bibliographic, and citations also external to our environment. At the same time it seems that, in some of our fringes, the phenomenon of self-referencing has taken root, to a degree that is by now rampant, to the point of assuming alarming dimensions, on the verge of degeneration. Obviously there is nothing wrong with autocitarsi, in some cases and where indispensable, in a wide-ranging field that firstly takes into account the fundamental and reference works on the subject matter; but citing only or predominantly oneself and one’s own surroundings is unqualified, from any point of view, and disqualifies those who pursue this practice.
