No, decisamente non è un itinerario per turisti distratti o succubi delle mode vacanziere del momento. Non è da tutti farsi sorprendere sotto un sole d’estate, nel silenzio arcano delle alture, fra le stoppie gialle contro un cielo compatto, mentre il canto delle cicale arde potente e monotono, articolato su due sole note, eterno come una nenia senza tempo, una sorta di silenzio nel silenzio, nell’ora in cui si rivela la presenza del dio Pan, essenza di un patto ancestrale con Gea, la grande madre. Sul filo di questa emozione si è disposti allora a guadagnarsi anche queste chiesette dalle facciate semplici e solari come antichi templi senza pretese, a cercare in queste rustiche Madonne la traccia di mani più adoranti che sapienti, a misurarsi con gli sguardi rapiti di questi santi di legno che ti sorprendono a volte per la grazia suprema di un volto o di due mani di viva e squisita anatomia.

Anna Russano Cotrone (1946) è titolare di Storia dell’Arte all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Catanzaro. Si è formata a Firenze alla scuola di Roberto Salvini e Mina Gregori. Ha collaborato con Maria Fossi Todorow alla prima sperimentazione didattica museale della Galleria degli Uffizi. Esperta in catalogazione di beni culturali, ha studiato il patrimonio artistico del Crotonese e di Taverna con pubblicazioni in rivista, in volume e in video. Cura mostre e cataloghi di artisti contemporanei. Ha pubblicato per i ns. tipi “Strongoli. Pietre alleate e frammenti di microstoria”.

The highlands of the district of Crotone are difficult to describe. As is true throughout Calabria, it is physically various both in terms of its natural features as well as its urban settlements. In this area a walk cannot be organised as a function of the history of art which, on its own, is not enough to recount the events and civilisation of this hospitable population. A many-faceted curiosity is what is needed and an eye attentive to this environment where, as a result of sharp altitude changes, a rich stratification of rocky sediment is easily readable and ranges from limestone to day, sandstone and shale. There is also a vast array of vegetation in the form of blueberry, gum and broom bushes which gradually give way to holm-oak, oak, walnut, pine and fir trees, including some truly majestic examples. In spring time the flora explodes in the reds, yellow-golds and oranges of the countryside nearest the sea, attenuating its tones to pinks and pale blue across the grassy mountain pastures, while wild orchids and multi­ coloured violets bloom on the highest slopes between Verzino and Savelli. Vast natural terraces, formed over the millennia under the mighty pressure of the shifting African continental plate, survey the immense panorama of the eternal sea. Clay residues washed down by rain waters reveal their shell fossil sediment as the water disappears under­ ground to sing its secret song among the stalagtites of lunar-like caves.
