Antiquities are the seeds of historical continuity, and this also applies to the civilization of the Arabian Peninsula. Although the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is renowned for Islamic traditions and values, Islam did not appear in a vacuum. On the contrary, it was founded upon layers of civilization and arose in a society which was characterized by openness and mobility. The pilgrimage to Makkah and the Ukaz market served to connect Arabia with a wide network of communications and movement of people and ideas, which facilitated the rapid diffusion of Islam.
