Giovanni Paolo II e Roma – John Paul II and the city of Rome

La città di Roma ha rappresentato una delle presenze più significative all’interno del percorso di vita di Giovanni Paolo II: dagli anni della formazione di Karol Wojtyla presso l’Angelicum (1946-1948) fino alla partecipazione al Concilio Vaticano II, dalla elezione al pontificato fino alla sua morte.
Lo stesso pontefice ha riassunto questa esperienza in un motto “Imparare Roma”: da una parte era presente la costante volontà di recuperare la secolare tradizione della chiesa di Roma, dall’altra c’era l’impegno di testimoniare una città in continua trasformazione. Durante gli anni del suo pontificato – 1978-2005 – la missione pastorale di Giovanni Paolo II ci racconta la sua città e la sua chiesa attraverso le oltre trecento visite alle parrocchie romane all’incontro con la comunità ebraica; attraverso la ricorrenze tradizionali della chiesa – dal Natale al Corpus Domini, dalla Via Crucis all’Immacolata–; attraverso l’esperienza del Sinodo e degli incontri con le più alte cariche cittadine, ma specialmente attraverso i suoi incontri con il mondo dei giovani, degli ammalati, degli emarginati.
La storia dell’incontro del pontefice con Roma viene raccontata in questo volume con foto, cimeli e documenti e brani dei suoi scritti e dei suoi discorsi. Un insieme che costituisce un ritratto fedele, e spesso del tutto inedito, dello sguardo del pontefice verso la Città Eterna che si può racchiudere in questa sua affermazione:
“Qual è la missione di Roma?…la missione di Roma è amor.”

The city of Rome played an extremely important role in the life of John Paul II: from the time Karol Wojtyla studied at the Angelicum (1946-1948)to his participation in the Second Vatican Council and later his election as Pope and finally his death.
The Pope used a single motto to describe this experience “learning about Rome”: on the one hand, it involved his aspiration to reinstate the century-old traditions of the church of Rome, on the other, to bear witness to a city that was continually changing. While he was Pope – 1978-2005 – many events tell the story of the pastoral mission of John Paul II to his city and his church: the over three hundred parish visits in the city of Rome, his meeting with the Jewish community, the traditional rites and feast days of the church – Christmas, Corpus Domini, the Stations of the Cross, the Immaculate Conception – the Synod and his meetings with high-ranking officials and city authorities. But more than all this, the main chapters of this story involve his meetings with the young, the sick and the outcast.
The photographs, mementos, documents and quotes from his writings and speeches published in this book illustrate and define the Pope’s relationship with the city of Rome. It paints a faithful and at times entirely surprising picture of the Pope’s consideration and affection for the Eternal City that can be summarised in his own words:
“What is Rome’s mission? … the mission of Rome is amor.”
