Il ghetto racconta Roma – The ghetto reveals Rome

Beniamin scese dal Campidoglio verso il circo Flaminio per raggiungere altri ebrei sulla riva del fiume all’isola Tiberina. Loro, ebrei romani da più di un secolo, avrebbero accolto gli schiavi ebrei condotti a Roma per il trionfo di Tito. Il rabbino di Scola Catalana guardava progredire le demolizioni del Ghetto dove era nato e quella parte di città cambiare rapidamente, fino a dare spazio alla nuova Sinagoga e ai palazzi umbertini. Il suo pronipote Gabriele fissa ora i lavori in corso, lo sguardo perso sulle antiche murature riscoperte e sui monumenti tornati alla luce. Sono quelli della storia di più di tre secoli di costrizione e poggiano su strutture antiche, quelle che duemila anni fa facevano da corona al circo Flaminio. Cosa si vede, cosa si pensa, come si corre tra ragione e fantasia di fronte ad un percorso della memoria.

Benjamin walked down from the Capitoline Hill towards the Circus Flaminius in order to reach the other Jews on the banks of the Tiber river at the Tiberina Island. They, who had been Roman Jews for more than a century, would welcome the Jewish slaves brought to Rome because of the victory of Titus. The Rabbi of the Scòla Catalana was witnessing the demolition of the Ghetto, where he was born, and the rapid changes occurring in that part of the city, until the construction of the new Synagogue and of the new Umbertine buildings. His great grandson, Gabriele, is now gazing at the restoration works that are being carried out. His eyes are lost in the ancient masonry and the monuments that are being unearthed. They are from the more than three centuries of constraint and they rest on ancient structures, those which two thousand years ago surrounded the Circus Flaminius. What you can see, what you can think and how you can follow the path of memory between reason and fantasy.

Luca Fiorentino, nato a Roma nel 1954, cinque figli, ingegnere, è stato consigliere e vice-presidente della Comunità Ebraica di Roma. È promotore di progetti di cultura ebraica, sui Beni Culturali (anni ’80), sul finanziamento e restauro del Museo della Comunità Ebraica di Roma e del complesso di S.Bartolomeo all’Isola Tiberina (1999-2000). È stato consulente del Sindaco Rutelli e uno dei progettisti del piano di recupero urbano e edilizio del Ghetto per la Regione Lazio. Ha già pubblicato (come coautore) la “Guida all’Italia Ebraica” e come autore “l’Ebreo senza qualità”, edizione Marietti. Sul Ghetto, con altri autori, “Il recupero del Ghetto” edizioni Multigrafica, “Il Ghetto di Roma” edizioni Kappa, “l’arte Ebraica a Roma e nel Lazio” edizioni Palombi. La prima edizione di questo libro è stata pubblicata nel 1997 da Edizioni Associate.
Luca Fiorentino is an engineer, specialized in building consolidation, preservation and urban planning. He was born in Rome in 1954, and has five children.He has been the promoter of various projects related to Jewish Culture, of the re-launching of the Jewish Cultural Heritage in the early 1980’s, and in 1999-2000, of the financing and restoration of the Jewish Community Museum and of the building complex of S. Bartolomeo at the Tiberina Island and of the Torre de’ Caetani. He was the consultant on Subsoil Technology of the former Mayor of Rome, Rutelli, and one of the planners and designers of the restoration projects carried out in the Roman Ghetto on behalf of the Lazio Region. He was the co-author of Guida all’Italia Ebraica (Guide to the Jewish Italy) and author of L’ebreo senza qualità (A Jew without qualities).In collaboration with other authors he also wrote and published Il recupero del Ghetto (The restoration of the Ghetto) Il Ghetto di Roma (The Ghetto of Rome) and L’arte ebraica a Roma e nel Lazio ( Jewish Art in Rome and Lazio). The first edition of this book was published in 1997 by Edizione Associate.
