Jiang Guo Fang

La Provincia di Roma ha avuto particolare interesse nel promuovere la mostra Jiang Guo Fang. Il pittore della Città Proibita presso Palazzo Venezia, dedicata ad uno degli artisti più significativi della Cina contemporanea.

L’esposizione abbraccia un periodo fondamentale nel percorso artistico di Fang: la serie dei dipinti che raffigurano la vita quotidiana all’interno della Città Proibita.
Le sue grandi tele sono opere senza tempo, nelle quali la profonda conoscenza della storia e della tradizione cinese si fondono con una tecnica che molto deve allo studio dei grandi Maestri europei del Seicento. Nel settembre 2004 Fang ha presentato, primo tra i pittori moderni, molte di queste opere proprio all’interno della Città Proibita, in un gioco di continui rimandi tra la città reale e quella dipinta.

Il reciproco fascino che Oriente e Occidente hanno esercitato l’uno nei confronti dell’altro nel corso del tempo diviene in Fang una ragione fondante della sua poetica. Allo stesso modo attraverso questa mostra si conferma il nostro impegno per aprire nuove vie agli scambi culturali e per rafforzare i profondi legami tra i Paesi.

L’esposizione vuole dunque essere un’occasione per intensificare i già consolidati rapporti tra Cina e Italia e conferma la volontà da parte della Provincia di Roma di promuovere la conoscenza e la valorizzazione della storia di questo Paese, così stratificata e complessa, raccontando un’epoca nell’immaginario, nelle opere e nei sentimenti di uno dei suoi protagonisti.

Alla fine di questo lungo viaggio nello spazio e nel tempo, emerge l’immagine di una cultura oggi profondamente mutata, che deve saper trarre dalle proprie antiche esperienze e dal ricco patrimonio culturale che custodisce l’ispirazione per realizzare il presente e per disegnare il proprio futuro.

It is a great honour for me to present the Jiang Guo Fang. The Painter of the Forbidden City Exhibition at especially at the Palazzo Venezia in Rome. This exhibition presents the work of one of the leading personalities of contemporary Chinese art to the Italian public for the very first time.

With careful attention paid to Western art, and especially to European realism, but also to recovering and valorising the past of his own country, this artist has developed a refined pictorial technique concentrating on large canvases.

A profound knowledge of Chinese history and culture is the starting point for his creations, gathered in various pictorial series; in particular historical works of art depicting portraits and scenes from Chinese life set in the Imperial Court, such as the series dedicated to the Forbidden City and presented in this exhibition.

Fang does not try and recreate historical authenticity, but wishes rather to show its evolution and contradictions through his own experience and sensitivity; hence, history and feelings merge in his work with astonishing realism. The large canvases become real “historical settings” in which the personalities of the Court move, especially young emperors and women of extraordinary beauty.

Fang is the first modern artist allowed the privilege of exhibiting his work in the magnificent halls of the Imperial Palace inside the Forbidden City, with a continuous cross-reference between the real and the portrayed city.

This exhibition provides an important opportunity for an encounter and a dialogue while also being a precious contribution for learning about China’s more modern history through the work of an artist who has been capable of drawing inspiration for creating a new pictorial language from the rich Chinese tradition’s artistic and cultural heritage.

This event contributes to the creation of new communication channels between Italy and China, showing the Italian public works of art by one of the leading personalities in the contemporary Chinese art world and also representing another significant moment for strengthening the already intense cultural cooperation and intensifying reciprocal knowledge between these two People.
