Mavrorachi. Il profumo di Afrodite ed il mistero della dea senza volto – The scent of Aphrodite and the mystery of the aniconic goddess

La mostra “Mavrorachi Il profumo di Afrodite e il mistero della dea senza volto. Dal 2000 a.C. ad oggi quattromila anni di profumo” ha suscitato in me un entusiasmo che va ben oltre l’interesse che un comune visitatore può dimostrare per un evento di tale rilevanza. Il fascino delle scoperte che il sito archeologico di Pyrgos-Mavrorachi ha riportato alla luce, hanno evocato in me sensazioni, curiosità, domande che nell’arco del tempo si sono amplificate in quanto correlate direttamente al mio lavoro presso “l’Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella”.
Il profumo e quanto ad esso attiene, costituisce una parte importante della mia vita e di conseguenza la scoperta di un sito dell’Età del Bronzo, dove si possono ammirare i resti di una fabbrica di profumi, le sue suppellettili mobili, le essenze e tutto ciò che gli abitanti del luogo usavano per la loro produzione, mi ha fatto amare da subito tutto ciò che questa mostra ci ha offerto di vedere. Un sincero grazie a tutti coloro che hanno creduto e collaborato all’iniziativa, che sottolinea l’antico legame che unisce i popoli del bacino del Mediterraneo, fino da tempi così lontani e in modo particolare l’isola di Cipro all’Italia. Il mio augurio più sincero è che questo pezzo di storia possa essere conosciuta da un numero sempre maggiore di persone e in modo particolare dai giovani. Per questo motivo desidero adoperarmi affinché questa mostra trovi le opportunità per divenire itinerante, in primo luogo per l’isola di Cipro, a cui si deve e in seconda istanza, perché si capisca quanto l’effimero abbia contribuito, fino dall’antichità, a creare cultura nel lungo e faticoso cammino del genere umano verso la civiltà.

The exhibition, “Mavrorachi, the scent of Aphrodite and the Mystery of the aniconic goddess. From 2000 BC to today – four thousand years of perfume” has generated a level of enthusiasm in me that goes beyond the interest, that a normal visitor would have for an event of this importance. The fascination of the discoveries that the archeological site of Pyrgos-Mavrorachi has brought to light, evokes sensations, curiosities and questions that have increased over time, since they directly relate to my work at the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. Perfume and everything related to it, constitutes an important part of my life and consequently, the discovery of a site of Bronze Age, where you can marvel at the remains of a perfume factory, its moveable furnishings, the essences and all that the inhabitants of the site used for their production, made me immediately love this exhibition and all that it offers for us to see. A sincere thanks to all those, who have believed and collaborated in this initiative, that highlights the ancient bond that unites the people of the Mediterranean basin, from times long past and particularly the island of Cyprus to Italy. My sincerest wish is that this piece of history will become known by more and more people, and especially by young people. For this reason, I want to spare no effort, in order that this exhibition finds the opportunity to travel, firstly for the island of Cyprus, to which it is indebted and secondly because one understands how since antiquity, the fleetingness of life has contributed to create culture via mankind’s long and tiring walk towards civilization.
