The international conference Strutture Pop-up per la cultura – Pop-up Structures for Culture aims to explore the role of temporary structures for cultural purposes through contributions from scholars, designers, and experts. The central theme is the analysis and documentation of temporary, flexible, and reusable structures, increasingly commissioned by cultural institutions to engage the widest possible audience withculture in all its forms. The last few decades have indeed seen a significant rise in the number of these structures, characterised by surprising forms and materials, designed to amaze, be photographed, shared on social media or published online, dismantled, and relocated to other places and contexts, both physical and digital. The research seeks to position these structures within the broader history of construction and engineering. It also aims to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary understanding of the criteria for assessing the environmental, economic, and social impacts of these projects, where temporariness and potential relocations often play a crucial role. The goal is to encourage best practices in the cultural sector, fostering greater awareness of sustainability and strategies to promote it. The event, curated by Gianluca Capurso and Lorenzo Grieco, is organised by the University of Rome Tor Vergata as part of the project Strutture pop-up per la cultura. Analisi e documentazione per la sostenibilità del futuro supported by Architetture Sostenibili per i luoghi della cultura, promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
