This volume collects the proceedings of the International Seminar The Mediterranean Medina, that took place in the School of Architecture at Pescara from 17th to 19th of June 2004.
The seminar promoted by the Department IDEA (Infrastrutture Design Engineering Architettura) of the Faculty of Architecture of Pescara and the Department ICAR (Scienze dell’Ingegneria Civile e dell’Architettura) of the Polytechnic of Bari aimed at the study of the particular physical characters and the transformation of the Mediterranean city.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has patronized the Seminar.
The publication of the Proceedings has been possible thanks to the co-financing of the MIUR, the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, for the year 2006.

Ludovico Micara, Architect (Rome 1942), Full Professor of Architecture and Urban Design in the Faculty of Architecture of the University “G. D’ Annunzio”, Pescara, he is deeply involved in researches, publications, projects on cities and landscapes of the Mediterranean and Islamic countries.
As scientific director, since 1996, of the “Italian Mission for the Study of the Architectural and Urban Heritage of the Islamic Period in Libya” he coordinated and published many researches on the Medina of Tripoli and the town-oasis of Ghadames.

Attilio Petruccioli Born in 1945, is professor of Landscape Architecture and Dean of the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Bari.
From 1994 to 1998 he was the Aga Khan Professor of Design for Islamic Societies at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology. As a result of his longstanding and passionate interest in both architectural design and the history of Islamic architecture, he has written and edited more than twenty-five books on these topics.

Ettore Vadini Architect (Pescara 1968), PhD in Architecture and Urban Design, since 2006 he teaches at the Faculty of Architecture of Pescara. Concerned with the Mediterranean landscapes and cities he participated in many research missions in Italy and foreign countries.
He lives and works in Pescara (Italy) where is partner of the “flv workshop”, a laboratory with experts and scholars in architecture, infrastructure and landscape. As project designer he received mentions and awards in various national and international design competitions.
