Roma Tearne è un’artista, nata nello Sri-Lanka, che vive e lavora in Inghilterra. Pittrice di formazione, negli ultimi cinque anni la sua opera si è concentrata quasi esclusivamente sulle tracce che la storia lascia in luoghi pubblici e privati. Nel 2002, dopo aver conseguito il Master of Arts alla Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, ha cominciato a lavorare allo Ashmolean Museum di Oxford, dove ha ricoperto il prestigioso incarico di “Leverhulme Artist in residence”. Ha lavorato un intero anno tra le collezioni del museo in stretta collaborazione con il dottor Arthur Macgregor, Curatore delle Antichità, indagando sulle storie “segrete” e fragili dei reperti. Lo Ashmolean è il più importante museo provinciale in Gran Bretagna, con una frequenza altissima di visitatori, paragonabile a quella del British Museum di Londra. Consapevole dell’esigenza di coinvolgere il pubblico, Tearne si è proposta di “defamiliarizzare il familiare”, e così facendo ha suscitato un ampio dibattito.

Roma Tearne is a Sri Lankan-born artist living and working in Britain. Trained as a painter her work has, for the last five years, been almost exclusively about the traces of history in public and private spaces. In 2002, having completed an M.A. at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art she began work at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, where she was the prestigious Leverhulme Artist in Residence. She worked for a year amongst the collection in close collaboration with Dr. Arthur Macgregor, Senior Keeper of Antiquities, where she excavated the ‘secret’ and fragile histories of the objects. The Ashmolean is the most important provincial museum in Britain and with a high count of ‘footfall’, in other words as many visitors as to the British Museum. Tearne, aware of the need for public involvement, set about ‘defamilarizing the familiar’, thereby creating much public debate.
