Al Red Dot Miami Art Fair 2010 (USA), durante la prima settimana di dicembre, verranno esposte alcune tra le opere della celebre artista Cybèle Varela, curatrice dei cataloghi CYBÈLE VARELA e AD SIDERA PER ATHANASIUS KIRCHER, pubblicati per i tipi della Gangemi Editore.

Cybèle Varela inizia la sua carriera in Brasile, negli anni Sessanta, come esponente del movimento tropicalista brasiliano. Alla fine degli anni Sessanta, si trasferisce a Parigi e sviluppa una ricerca che s’inserisce nel movimento della Nouvelle Figuration, per poi andare a vivere a Ginevra, in Svizzera. Tramite l’utilizzo di immagini disparate, che derivano dalla cultura Pop, Cybèle Varela crea un mondo onirico e sottilmente ironico, dove la realtà prende forma nell’irrazionale. Con colori luminosissimi e vibranti, le sue opere interrogano la molteplicità delle immagini che travolgono ogni giorno di più il nostro campo visivo.

«My recent work plays around the repetition of a constant element, a colorful piece of textile, sometimes recognizable, sometimes only depicted in parts. On the one hand recalling the memory of a journey on this planet, on the other travelling through parallel universes, where fragments of life are mixed together, as in a dream. Images are essentially forms, plays of color and line, be it a tree, a satellite, a trunk or a bird. Working with video introduces movement and sound. Digital photographs make it possible to reinvent my paintings and this process of development and combination fascinates me. However, I’m first of all a painter, and I prefer working with acrylics, either on canvas, linen, textiles, etc., so I feel in greater control, my hand expresses itself and everything is more organic. Strong colors are a necessary element. I always love vibrant tonalities, I feel them as if they were candies, irresistible. I start working on a sketch. However, it is only an initial thought that develops together with other elements that come up afterwards, elements that I had not imagined from the outset. I don’t believe that my work has a dreamlike quality. Dreams, lost instants, are as real as those moments lived when we are awaken.
